It was a fierce competition at the Elk Grove Giant Pumpkin Festival that included two local football coaches who couldn't come close to the 19 pounds, 6 ounces gobbled down in a mere 8 minutes by the pride of Vallejo, California: Joey "Jaws" Chestnut.
Joey fell short of the record of 20 pounds, 13 ounces held by his nemesis, Matt Stonie, but he's sure it's not out of reach.
"I know I have room for more," Chestnut says, "I started off a little bit slow, and it took a little while to find my rhythym, but I was able pull enough and eat enough to win, and I'm happy as heck."
Joey says part of what makes him so happy is getting the win so close to home at a festival he enjoys. He's also very complimentary of the pies made by Mariel Black and her crew at Sinful Treats, which he describes simply as "delicious".
It took a week to make the 65 pies at 2 pounds a piece, most of which were gone in minutes.
The other big winner at this year's festival is Russ Pugh of Santa Rosa, whose giant pumpkin weighs in at a whopping 1,944 and a half pounds.
