San Francisco and Sacramento are home to the nation's costliest doctor visits.

Preventive care will cost you an average of $251 in San Francisco or $219 here in Sacramento.

The cities rank high on new lists from Castlight Health, which helps companies track medical costs.

Jennifer Schneider says in addition to checkups, they looked at common procedures such as lipid panels, a head CT and a back MRI.

Blood work in the capital city is pretty cheap but $1,400 CT scans and $2,600 MRIs are not. She says the prices are set with insurance companies.

"So, in certain markets when there's a concentration of providers, there's higher negotiating power," Schneider said.

One tip: try freestanding operations, not hospitals, for those imaging tests.
