The new school year is under way and California health officials are reminding parents to get their kids immunized.

Dr. Robert Schechter with the California Department of Public Health says this is an important item for parents to take care of.

"These vaccinations are vital to protect students, families and schools from pertussis and other potentially dangerous illnesses -- measles, chicken pox, a variety of illnesses," he said.

Schools are required to verify the immunization record of every child to make sure all required vaccinations are up to date before a child goes to kindergarten or the seventh grade.
