Why does the death rate go up around the holiday season?

There is a spike in deaths for all age groups on Christmas, the day after Christmas and New Years Day -- except for children.

That's according to the Centers for Disease Control. They say that 93 percent of those who die this time of year die of natural causes.

You may think it's the stress of the holiday season -- experts say that's part of it -- cardiac deaths are slightly higher, but there's also the idea that people who are not feeling well put off going to seek care until after the holidays so they can spend Christmas or New Year's with family.

And the idea that suicides go up? This study found that the suicide rate is actually at its lowest in December.
