LAKE TAHOE, Calif. -- State leaders and officials gathered in Lake Tahoe today for the annual summit.

Gov. Jerry Brown signed a joint proclamation with Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval saying their states will continue to cooperate to protect the lake and Tahoe basin.

They called Lake Tahoe a "unique national treasure that must be preserved" as a gift to future generations.

In 2007, the Angora fire destroyed 254 homes and threatened the lake's clarity.

At the 17th annual Lake Tahoe summit today, the bi-state commission said they will continue to offer strong wildfire protection and preparedness and to work with tourists to help protect the Tahoe basin from wildfire.
