Union, UC Hospitals Battle Over Contract

Union, UC Hospitals Battle Over Contract

The union representing more than 22,000 service and patient care technical workers at UC Hospitals isn't happy with the contract they're getting, but UC administrators say it's fair.

American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees' Todd Stenhouse isn't just upset about the financial ramifications, but says the union is concerned about patient safety.

"These hospitals are not being staffed appropriately. Patients are needlessly being put at risk," Stenhouse said.

But UC's Dianne Klein points to hospital rankings issued just last week by U.S. News and World Report.

"UC Medical Centers were recognized as No. 1 in their metropolitan areas. If we were, in fact, so unsafe, it's highly unlikely that we would get these consistently excellent ratings," Klein said.

She says the real issue is pension contributions, and that AFSCME has continually argued that they deserve a better deal than other unions.
