Activists are demanding California lawmakers move forward with plans to reduce state prison populations immediately even though the state has been granted more time.

Several groups joined forces today to deliver a letter to Senate Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg's office urging the push for prison reduction proposals now. Similar letters were sent to Assembly Speaker John Perez's and Governor Jerry Brown's state and local offices.

California was recently given two extra years to reduce its prison population by over 10,000 prisoners, a timeframe Brown had said was necessary to make the right moves in such a scenario.

The activists say such an extension will cause lawmakers to lose focus, and the prison population is currently at unfathomable levels.
