It's been three years since a 9.0 earthquake shook Japan, and created a Pacific-wide Tsunami that caused major damage from Japan to the California coast. So what have we learned since then?

Kelly Houston with the Governor's Office of Emergency Services says the Japanese earthquake and tsunami was much more powerful than anyone anticipated.

He says all along the coast in California, we suffered millions of dollars in damage from the wave that came all the way across the Pacific Ocean and hit California.

Houston goes on to say that one of the best things his office can do is send a warning as soon as possible.

"We are most concerned with getting notifications out to those who are in areas most vulnerable - especially on the coast," Houston says.

He says here in Sacramento we are not tsunami-proof and that we all need to be prepared.
