Sacramento Fire crews battled a three-alarm a grass fire along the American River Parkway near Cal Expo Tuesday afternoon.
The fire started just before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday on the west side of Interstate 80 and sent heavy smoke into the sky that could be seen for miles around.
The fire was burning heavy brush and according to officials there was no immediate threat to structures.
Officials say the fire is moving toward the American River, a natural fire break.
A spokeswoman for the California State Fair said the fairgrounds are not impacted by flames or smoke, and there is no threat to those attending the fair.
Sections of westbound I-80 were closed for a short time this evening, but have since re-opened. Traffic is still heavy, and drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.
The fire burned near where a large and dangerous wildfire burned on July 4th.
