A so-called "grass roots" organization is warning that California's cap-and-trade regulations will force you to pay a more at the pump starting in January.

This group, called Fed Up at the Pump by those who organized it, represents the oil and gas industry.

They claim gas prices are going to spike in January as members of the industry are required to purchase California cap-and-trade credits to pay for the air pollution they generate.

However, the California Air Resources Board suggests that many of the gas companies have been buying the credits ahead of time and have already passed their cost on to you.

Environmentalist groups say this is a scare tactic.

Politicians -- even some Democrats in the state Legislature -- are nervous about a voter backlash this fall in anticipation of higher gas prices.
