The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department's K-9s are getting special gifts this week, thanks to generous community donations.
Combat gauze, tourniquets and pressure dressings are among the items in the emergency stat packs being given to all of the department's K-9 handlers.
Deputy Ramie Folena is grateful for the first-aid items, which she knows will come in handy for the department's K-9s, including her German Shepherd Nikk.
"It's very comforting to know that I've got an emergency kit just in case something happens. You know, we have had one of our K-9's injured, K-9 Drago was shot several months ago, and that would be a perfect example of needing a pack like this," she said.
The wallet-size packs cost about $75 each.
The Police and Working K-9 foundation presented the gifts thanks to donations from last summer's "Cover Your K-9" fundraiser.
This year's event is coming up this weekend at area Pet Food Express stores.
