The Bay Bridge isn't the only project to see some unusual bolt problems.

It's the Carquinez Brige that links Vallejo to Contra Costa County.

You've most likely heard about the state Senate report on the missteps with the Bay Bridge, but contained in that report is also a mention of a "near disaster" 13 years ago.

That's when 250,000 critical bolts arrived at the Carquinez retrofit site that were all the wrong size.

They were from the same Chinese company that took heat for the Bay Bridge problems and had to be rejected and remade.

The public didn't hear about this -- until now, and Caltrans hasn't been clear on who picked up the bill.

The Chinese have issued a complete denial about this -- saying they just provided steel back then and not the bolts in question.
