Bill Working Though Legislature Would Subsidize Diapers for Low-Income Families

A bill working its way through the California Legislature would subsidize diapers for needy families.

Under this legislation, the state would provide welfare families with $80 a month for each child under two years old to pay for diapers, costing California up to $120 million a year.

Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez says her bill would outweigh the costs in the long run.

"I'm looking to provide some sort of welfare reform, where we actually help women in low-income families become self sufficient," Gonzalez said.

She says diapers are a barrier to low-income parents going to work or school because they can't leave their child at daycare without diapers.
