Bill Would Require Toy Guns to be Made in Bright Colors

A bill making its way through the legislature would require certain toy and replica guns to be molded in bright colors or made transparent to prevent mistaking them for real firearms.

Senate Bill 199 is returning to the Senate after barely passing the Assembly on a 41-to-34 vote, which is the minimum needed to pass.

The bill would apply to air guns that fire pellets or BBs and excludes other types of toy guns. Supporters of the bill argue that too many kids have been shot by police, thought to be carrying actual firearms.

Opponents say this is the wrong way to approach the problem, saying criminals could easily color their own guns to fool police.

A similar bill failed in 2011 after the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old boy in Santa Rosa when a sheriff's deputy mistook the boy's toy rifle for an AK-47.
