SACRAMENTO -- It's another blow to the food processing industry in Sacramento. On the heels of the closure of Coca Cola Bottling, Campbell Soup Company, and Fresh & Easy, word comes that Bimbo Bakeries will shut down their Elk Grove Baking Plant. One hundred sixty-eight employees will be idled.
Bimbo executives say the plant did not have the capacity to remain competitive. The bakery makes breads under the brand names of Earth Grains, Oroweat, Thomas English Muffins, and Entenmann's.
Tortillas and breads for the Tia Rosa brand are also made there. Bimbo officials say they will try to assist as many laid off employees as they can as production shifts to other Bimbo baking facilities. The plant will close on Nov. 8.
