A California Capitol peace officer now finds himself out of a job over his apparent use of cocaine.

State Senate Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg fired Gerardo Lopez late Thursday after the Sacramento Bee asked the lawmaker about court records involving Lopez.

Those records showed Lopez had cocaine in his system when he was involved in a 2012 gunfight that left one man dead in front of Lopez's house.

Lopez had been an employee of the state Senate since 1999 and was a member of the chamber's in-house law enforcement unit.
