The Calaveras Unified School District is trying to figure out how to close a $2 million budget gap and parents aren't accepting the proposed "Cut List" the Board is offering.

The school board has offered options but parents shot them down.

One option is to close Toyon Middle School, but parents pushed to have that option removed from the list.

Five elementary teachers and one high school teacher could be laid off, the preschool program would be cut as well as some administrative and maintenance jobs.

It was the option to cut athletics and music that got the strongest reaction from parents.

The board did remove those options from the table but they still need to find more cuts to balance the budget.

The district sites declining enrollment and less state funding for the budget shortfall.
