Nearly 18,000 retailers are getting letters from the California Board of Equalization letting them know they could be paid a visit soon by a Statewide Compliance and Outreach Program team. BOE officials say the visits are meant to make sure retailers know how to properly report sales and use tax, increase compliance with tax laws, and to assure taxpayers that the state’s tax system is fair and equal.

The BOE has found that noncompliance with business tax laws contributes to more than $2 billion in uncollected sales and use taxes.
