California chrome has placed first at the 139th Preakness Stakes in Baltimore, keeping the hopes of winning a Triple Crown alive.

The Preakness Stakes was the second race in the Triple Crown, with the Belmont Stakes as the third and final race, which will be held on June 7 in New York. The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978.

California Chrome, who won the Kentucky Derby was favored to win today's race with 3-5 odds. The next best odds belong to Social Inclusion, at 5-1, who placed third in the race.

There were some reports that California Chrome was suffering from a throat blister, which reportedly led to some coughing in the stable. But it did not seem to affect Chrome's performance in any way.

Chrome was be ridden by jockey Victor Espinoza. Since Espinoza teamed up with Chrome in December, the duo has been undefeated.

The conditions at Pimlico were fair after a day of rain and thunderstorms. But dry and warm conditions have dried out the track. The weather today was mostly sunny.

The course is 1 mile and 3/16ths long and $1.5 million is at stake. More than 120,000 people showed up to watch the race.
