California Chrome attempted history Saturday when he ran the third leg of the Triple Crown at Belmont Park, however he came up short, finishing in a disappointing 4th place tie with Wicked Strong in the Belmont Stakes.

The racing world's eyes focused on the race where California Chrome tried to become the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years, when Affirmed achieved the feat, however in the end it was Tonalist who took the race.

Caryn Keller says the Coalinga foaled thoroughbred faced a pair of challenges in the big race.

"He's had a very hard campaign from the Derby 'til now, that to me is number one. And number two is the distance," Keller said.

At the same time, Keller, who trained thoroughbreds locally for more than 20 years, says California Chrome was aware that something special was going on.

"They are very intuitive and they pick up on energy, and sure, there's a lot of excitement, there's a lot of crowds around him, and he picked up on it and seemed to enjoy it," Keller said.

She thinks that Chrome has handled everything well, and losing at the Belmont Stakes it wasn't because of fear or nervousness.

Chrome's owner's hometown of Yuba City held a viewing party for the race, which brought out all kinds of fans, while Cal Expo also hosted a viewing party today, which was the only location in our area where official wagers could be placed on the race.
