The Golden State now has a new state amphibian.

The California Red-Legged Frog was honored with the title this morning by the state legislature and Governor Jerry Brown.

Made popular by Mark Twain in his book "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" from 1865, the species was once nearly-extinct after the "forty-niners" almost ate them into extinction.

The Californian Red-Legged Frog is listed as threatened under the Federal Endangered species Act.
