The state is looking to return $16 million in unclaimed tax refunds.

The Franchise Tax Board says it's sitting on 48,000 refunds from 2013 that were undeliverable because of address changes or typos.

"Most of them are hovering under $1,000, but we do have a few that are in the tens of thousands," Spokeswoman Denise Azimi said.

Azimi says one is as high as $54,000. Sacramento County has just more than a thousand refunds waiting to be collected, totaling about $300,000.

"Probably the best advice is, is use direct deposit when you're getting your tax refunds," she said.

People change bank accounts less frequently than addresses.
