California Will Play Major Role in Testing of Earthquake Alert System

Posted April 25th, 2014 @ 6:32am by KFBK News

California will play a major role in the testing of a new earthquake early warning system.

Long Beach Deputy City Manager Reginald Harrison says Long Beach city has been tabbed by Caltech and the U.S. Geological Survey as a test site for the system.

"We will get an alert, it's a web-based technology, so we would get that early warning -- whether it's seconds or minutes, we'll take whatever we can," Harrison said.

The new warning system uses existing seismic networks to detect tremors in order to send out a warning before big earthquakes hit regions away from the epicenter of the shaker.

It's designed to give up to 10 seconds warning so people can take cover.
