California's population grew about a percent in the last year to exceed 38.3 million.

The state Department of Finance says California added 356,000 people last year, with the highest growth rate in the San Francisco Bay Area.

San Jose, the state's third largest city behind LA and San Diego, hit 1 million residents.

Sacramento grew about a half a percent to 475,000 residents.

In our area, Folsom and Roseville saw the largest gains, of 2.5 percent and 2 percent, respectively.

Despite the overall growth, rural counties such as Amador, Calaveras and Plumas, generally lost population.
