Another reminder today, of men and women who've sworn an oath, and laid down their lives to protect us.

A solemn reading at the CHP Academy of the names of 225 officers that have been lost in the line of duty.

'It is the name of a family member, a friend, a loved one. It is the name of someone who is unique and irreplaceable,' says Commissioner Joe Farrow at the annual "roll call" witnessed by family members but also cadets who are earning their badges.

Zack Schneck of Mount Shasta has been training four months, saying 'It's an honor to be here.'

The oath he'll take now seems all the more real.

The Highway Patrol saw no deaths in 2013.

Two officers died in a crash in February.
