Sacramento's City Council is taking the first step -- considering building new over spending to renovate.

Acting on a proposal by Councilman Steve Hansen, the Sacramento City Council voted last night to put together a task force exploring the virtue of building a new performing arts center as compared with renovating the old one.

Sacramento's Community Center Theatre needs anywhere from $11 million to $56 million in repairs and upgrades to a building that hasn't been renovated since it opened in 1976.

So building new might make more sense.

The task force is comprised of city and arts officials who will compile plans and report on its findings in six months.

Officials have been talking about renovation plans for the past 14 years, but with outside competition from Davis and Folsom, dressing up an old dowager is looking like a losing proposal.
