Community Colleges Closer to Offering Four-Year Degrees

Community Colleges Closer to Offering Four-Year Degrees

Should the state's community colleges be able to offer four-year degrees? The Legislature are on board with that idea.

State Senator Marty Block believes we're on the verge of making history with his college education bill.

"For the first time in California, allow community colleges to offer students four-year degrees, which are the degrees that are really required now in the workplace for entry-level in many, many jobs," he said.

It's out of the Legislature, and now Governor Jerry Brown will consider signing Block's bill and creating a pilot program in which 15 community colleges could offer one BA degree each starting next year.

Those degrees could not be duplicates of degrees offered by either CSU or UC schools.

If the governor signs, then California would join more than 20 states that have enacted similar legislation.
