Some city officials are putting public pressure on a large hospital chain to take over the site of Sleep Train Arena.

City Council members Angelique Ashby and Steve Cohn have both been pushing for construction of a hospital across the 184 acre site once a new arena is built downtown.

At yesterday's State of Natomas Event, Ashby said she's fighting for a very specific kind of medical center -- one from Kaiser Permanente.

The chain's officials won't go so far as to commit to anything but there have reportedly been talks about the idea multiple times.

As the Bee reminds us, the council has a timeline that calls for some kind of decision or proposal later this month.

Any construction, of course, would depend on the lifting of a federal building moratorium, which will be in place until levees are upgraded.
