Plans for expansion may soon take off at Mather Airport. But are they on the right course?
Later today, Sacramento County Supervisors will re-consider a master plan for the old Air Force base that includes $107 million in long-term upgrades.
The goal, if it moves ahead, is to encourage more large-scale cargo shipping.
"The improvements would include both air-side facilities -- runway/taxiway improvements -- but also then landslide developments -- hangers, roads, improved access and circulation," Supervisor Don Nottoli said.
Nottoli is a supporter, but has come up against noise complaints in Folsom and critics who say shipping is on the decline.
Mather already handles cargo and has lost money for a decade.
The County Airport System sees the facility as important in relieving pressure from Sacramento International.
