Firefighters extinguished a grass fire in a South Sacramento neighborhood on Tuesday.

"The first responding battalion chief noticed the smoke column was pretty large. He requested a second alarm," Roberto Padilla with Sac City Fire Department said.

Padilla says some shed-like structures were damaged in the fire.

The fire was near the Elk Grove city line in the 7800 block of Shasta Avenue.

"Crews were able to get a quick knock-down and they did a really good job of protecting the rest of the homes," Padilla said.

A resident used a water hose to protect his home as crews extinguished the flames nearby.

"Our message is to anybody that lives in a rural area, or a city setting for that matter, to remember defensible space," he said.

Padilla says that is crucial as the temperatures continue to rise.

He also asks people to remember not to use motorized gardening equipment in grass during peak heat hours.
