Crews Work to Clean Up Mess Caused by Water Main Break in LA

Clean-up efforts are under way after a water main break shot nearly 10 million gallons of water onto the streets of West LA.

The break happened yesterday afternoon near the UCLA campus and it took DWP officials three hours to cap the over 90-year-old water main.

"It's a high pressure main, it's required to have about three different valves shut off, it has to be done in a certain order and at a certain rate."

Some of the millions of gallons flooded part of the UCLA campus, and left a couple of inches of standing water in the newly renovated Pauley Pavilion and a nearby athletic field.

A giant sink hole is open on Sunset Boulevard, and tractors, backhoes, and big rigs carrying material will be in and out of the neighborhood for most of the day today as crews work to clean up the muddy mess.
