People in Sacramento's Curtis Park neighborhood are banding together to prevent a development next door from bringing in big box stores.

Saying the chain stores erode the character of neighborhoods, drive out small businesses, and ultimately result in a net loss of jobs, a group of Curtis Park residents are fighting back against plans to develop the neighboring railyard by Sac City College.

They want the city of put strong restrictions on development in the area -- something the Sacramento Bee reports targets the planned Curtis Park Village project.

According to their online petition, the group Curtis Park Character Advocates says it needs 273 signatures to get the Sacramento Council to act, and the group claims to have 227 as of now.
