An investigation is looking into how a driver was hit and killed at a train crossing in Elk Grove.

The facts on this story are shifting as the investigation continues.

Whether he drove around downed crossing arms, or skidded through them on a wet roadway, an Elk Grove man died when his Toyota Carolla was hit by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train at the crossing on Calvine Road Wednesday.

The force of the collision threw the car sideways into a crossing sign and flipped over, coming to rest in the center median.

The driver was trapped in the vehicle and later died before he could be extracated.

We've reached out to BNSF on this, we're waiting to hear back from them.

The name of the driver has not been released.
