An elevated stretch of downtown freeway needs fixing. Starting in May, Caltrans will start work on the big, long bridge portion of the U.S. 50 between 18th and 24th Streets.

The viaduct needs work as it's 46-year-old, cracked, warped, and in need of a seismic upgrade.

This means daytime roadwork to fix the lanes, widen the shoulder, and pour a fresh concrete deck.

And construction means back ups. Eastbound 50 work will begin in May, Westbound will get the same treatment starting in July.

For the first phase, detours will involve mostly Broadway and Alhambra being pressed into service to handle the traffic.
