Firefighters Learn Important Lesson for Cal Expo Blaze

It was an important test. Sac City firefighters say they've learned some lessons from the blaze near Cal Expo.

Crews have battled a handful of wildfires along the American River Parkway recently, but this was the first that forced evacuations or necessitated backup from agencies outside of town.

It was also a chance to test a new tool that separates the river into a grid.

"We've made a lot of great steps within the last year of coming up with markers," Sac City Fire Assistant Chief Niko King said.

King says the last thing you want is to just drive into unfamiliar territory, "toward the smoke."

There's no word on a what sparked the fire as of yet. The challenge of drought conditions will likely remain through October, until rainfall reduces the risk.

"Are there going to be additional fires? Absolutely. But progress is definitely being made," King said.
