Boreal Mountain Resort in the Lake Tahoe area is the first establishment in the state to officially start its winter ski season, thanks to recent snowfall.

The slopes at Boreal officially opened at noon Friday.

The National Weather Service reports that on Monday, up to 15 inches of snow fell in the Sierra.

Between fresh snow and snowmaking, operators of other Tahoe ski resorts are hoping to open up for winter skiing by Thanksgiving.
