Former POW and Alabama Senator Jeremiah Denton has died. Denton survived more than seven years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam and alerted the U.S. military to conditions there when he blinked the word "torture'' in Morse code during a television interview. The conservative Republican served one term in the Senate.

His oldest son, Jerry says his father still spoke openly of his support for the U.S. war effort during his captivity,

"He could experience fear, but he did not let his fear stop him from doing what he thought he should do," he said.

The 89-year-old had been in declining health.
