Former Democratic Party chairman Robert Strauss is dead at the age of 95.

Strauss, who served as party chairman from 1972 to 1977, is credited with aiding in the election of President Jimmy Carter.

He was one of Washington's top power brokers and a key advisor to Presidents ranging from Lyndon Johnson to George H.W. Bush.

A former Dallas lawyer and FBI agent, Strauss served as the final U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union and was the first ambassador to Russia after the communist system collapsed.

His son says Strauss died at his home in Washington, DC.
