Four California universities find themselves ranked among the top ten in the world for research purposes.

The Great Britain-based "Times Higher Education" magazine has sent out its annual ranking of schools based on the reputation of world research universities. Stanford was placed third on the list, with U.C. Berkeley coming in sixth. Caltech was ninth while UCLA rounded out the top ten.

Harvard University topped the list, followed by MIT. The rankings are based on the opinions of professors and other scholars around the globe.
