The Sacramento City Council is giving the thumbs up to a program to reimburse homeowners who replace their lawn with something less water-needy.
The River Friendly Landscaping Program will use money from the city's utilities budget.
Councilman Steve Hansen suggests it doesn't go far enough.
"Reading the staff report in the resolution, it still doesn't quite meet my desire to change the development code to remove the requirement for green grass and lawns or at least supplement it to give options," Hansen said.
This "cash for grass" plan is actually a rebate deal, and the city plans to begin issuing rebates to participating water customers next month.
