Governor Jerry Brown has signed landmark legislation to help build housing for homeless vets.

Assembly Bill 639 was championed by Assembly Speaker John Perez.

"With this law, we'll be asking the voters to repurpose existing bonds to make a dramatic difference in the lives of homeless veterans by building them the affordable housing they deserve," Perez said.

Perez says veteran homelessness is a blot on California's image.

"We have got to do a lot more to live up to our obligation to our veterans. It is shameful that a quarter of the nation's homeless veterans are in our state," Perez said.

Thursday's signing ceremony took place at Veterans Village of San Diego, which has served homeless vets since its founding in 1981.
