They called it a "day of action." Hundreds of tenants rallied at the state Capitol this morning to protest safety net cuts, demand rebates, and push new legislation.

"To build much needed -- desperately needed -- affordable housing across the state," Dean Preston with the group Tenants Together said.

Preston joined with Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, who had a simple message.

"The rent is too damn high!"

There were calls for reform to the "Ellis Act," which lets landloards evict tenants to "go out of business" and sell properties.

Housing advocates say it leads to speculation from outside parties and is a major problem in some areas of San Francisco.
