The 2014 Winter Olympic Games will cost Russia an estimated $51 billion, topping the $40 billion that was spent by China for the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, which had three times the number of events.

When Vancouver hosted the Winter Olympics, they spent a mere $8.7 billion.

Many of the projects in Sochi have come in over budget, namely the Laura Biathlon and Ski Complex, which was originally priced at $500 million. The final costs are now estimated to top $2.7 billion.
