Plans are moving forward for the demolition and construction of new high-rise apartments in downtown Sacramento.

Beverly Hills real estate investment firm Kennedy Wilson says their plan to create 1,000 new dwelling units will bring much needed housing for the downtown area. Demolition and construction of the Capitol Villa Garden Apartments would begin in 2016.

The project - called Sacramento Commons - would create a super-block in the middle of Fifth, Seventh, N and P streets. Kennedy Wilson plans to keep the 203- high-rise units at Capitol Towers.

Speaking at Thursday's meeting when the plans were unveiled - those opposed say it would take away from the area's 1950's and 60's architecture -- as well as creating a nuisance for those living nearby.

However Sacramento planning commissioners say this plan addresses the need for more housing for those working downtown.
