The Israeli military says it has launched a ground offensive in Gaza.

The army said in a statement late Thursday that after 10 days of Hamas attacks, it has "initiated a ground operation within the Gaza Strip."

The Israeli Defense Force says it's in a new phase of Operation Protective Edge, which was launched after fresh rocket attacks from Hamas.

The IDF says its goal is to hit tunnels that allow terrorists to infiltrate Israel and carry out attacks.

According to the IDF, that will require "precise operations."

The army says the objective is to strike a "significant blow to Hamas' terror infrastructure."
