Nonprofit executive Rick Jennings will be the next member of the Sacramento City Council, defeating former Fire Chief Julius Cherry in a very close race.

Final election results show Jennings had 50.53 percent of the votes for District 7, which is made up of the Pocket, Greenhaven and Valley Hi neighborhoods.

The figure is enough to avoid a run-off with Jennings in November.

The race for a council seat in east Sacramento and South Natomas is also now clear.

City parks commissioner Jeff Harris and financial adviser Cyril Shah will face off again in November.

Elections officials finished counting ballots in Sacramento County today.
