A hearing is going on right now in Sacramento Superior Court over whether petitions by STOP -- Sacramento Taxpayers Opposed to Pork -- are legitimate and should be validated.

STOP wants the public to vote on whether to fund a new downtown arena. But the Sacramento City Clerk said the more than 22,000 signed petitions STOP collected were invalid because they didn't meet city election code and also because there were nine different versions.

Judge Tim Frawley says he doesn't see any intent to deceive or mislead on behalf of STOP, but described their signature gathering process as "gross carelessness."
