June is National Safety Month and home care experts are putting a focus on the safety of seniors.

Buck Shaw of Home Instead Senior Care says it doesn't take a lot to remove some of the most common hazards.

"A lot of the falls are caused by loose rugs, piled clutter, loose railings, cords, cables, poor lighting.," Shaw said.

These can be fixed with some simple changes.

"Like putting in some simple grab bars, ramps, railings, things of that nature," he said.

One out of every three trips made by a senior citizen to the hospital is caused by a fall or accident in the home.

Shaw recommends taking at least one day a year for a safety check of your parents' home.  I
