Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones is being asked to help head off violence in the local Slavic communities as tension rises over the conflict between Russia and Ukraine:

The sheriff says religious leaders want him to keep emotions from boiling over,

"The face to face confrontations are relatively minor.  They really wanted to get out in front of this," said Sheriff Jones.

He said that church groups want him to remind Russians and Ukrainians alike that they need to respect each other and their new homeland.

"...and honor the countries that we came from in the best way that we could honor them," added Jones.

The sheriff says if the territorial spat between Russia and Ukraine worsens there could be slavic immigrant violence in this country.

"I just don't want it to be here," Jones emphasized.

He's offering to hold community forums and otherwise spread a message of tolerance and respect.
