California's two U.S. senators are among a slew of lawmakers demanding the NFL push the Washington Redskins to change their name.

Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein are two of the nearly 50 U.S. senators who signed their names on the letter directed to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The letter points out that with the NBA taking a stand against Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for his racial remarks, now is the time to "send the same clear message as the NBA did: that racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports."

The senators say allowing the Redskins to keep their name is akin to endorsing racial slurs against Native Americans.
